In the year 2020 Dairy Farmers in East Africa were faced with a disease outbreak called Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) affecting cattle in parts of Rift Valley Kenya. Data collected by Frontiers, showcased that farmers keeping indigenous cows had an average loss of 12,431KES (Equivalent to 123USD), while farmers with exotic breeds lost an average income of KES 76,297 (755USD). Besides that , the average milk production rate resulted to a decline in earnings for indigenous cattle at an average of 9,750 KES (97USD), while for the exotic cattle owners the average loss was at 43,337 KES (431 USD).
To mitigate such economic losses for small holder farmers, we urge you to support the initiative by helping farmers insure their livestock for a period of 12 months against loss and death. Once a farmer losses their livestock either through death or theft, the farmer will be compensated towards regaining their income source.
